State Highway 100 near ThruTown

Los Fresnos, TexasFeb 24, 20071 Comments

Texas State Highway 100 notorious with locals as a speed trap.
Especially brutal enforcement to out of state drivers.
Highway speed is 65mph except through Los Fresnos where speed is reduced to 25mph with very, very little warning (small obscured sign). Between I-77 and S Padre Island on SH-100.
We drive this route many times a year and have never driven thru Los Fresnos, Tx without seeing the town cops ticketing drivers passing through town!

Comments:
I was traveling thru Los Fresno, TX on my way to SPI. Went thru town at posted speed limits, when I got on the other side I still was observing posted speed limits. I was in the 55 speed zone going 56 MPH, I passed an officer, and immediately he put on his lights. My wife asked me what the speed limit was as I said 55, and she asked me if I was speeding and I looked at the speed odemeter at the same time I passed the officer and I was going 56. I didn't think the officer was after me because I wasn't speeding. He roared up behind me like I was trying to evade him. He came up to my window and asked for my driver licence and insurance, I told him this was a rent-a-car and I was not sure where the insurance card was. I finally found the card in the glove box and handed it to him. He told me I was going 66 in a 55 zone, I told him I looked at my speed odometer just when I seen him because that is where the speed limit increased and I was still going the previous posted speed limits. He said several time I was going 66, for the sake of an argument, and my granddaughter who was sitting in the back seat observing this incident because her mother is a police officer in another county in Texas, and I didn't want her to get the wrong impression, I stopped talking and let the officer do his thing. We passed another vehicle that was pulled over on are way back to Harlingen, that had out of state plates on their vehicle as well. The thought came to me then that there was a big possibility that they were profiling out of state cars. There are other comments here that support this.
