State Highway 106

Georgiana, AlabamaMay 11, 20076 Comments

Exit 114 off of I-65 onto hwy 106 through Georgiana, the speed limit is a firm 55 but then drops to 45, and then to 35 all within a couple of miles. It is clearly posted but you better pay attention.

Comments:
Hwy 106 through Georgiana to I 65 is only about three miles long but speed drops from 55 to 45 to 35 in about a mile. It's bad when a town has to resort to traps like this in order to pay for a police force. Got me today going 54mph.

Sorry that you feel that Georgiana is a speed trap but to the people who actually live on this stetch of highway it is not a speed trap. Due to the amount of traffic and the people who still drive like they are on interstate 65 it is dangerous for us to try and exit our drives with out getting in an accident. PLease slow down it could save your life or mine. Our police are not writing tickets in order to raise money for our town but because we ask them to patrol our area in order to slow down those who are speeding and risking the lives of us and our families.

I was going in the other direction, but this is definitely a speed trap. I had been driving 100 miles in Alabama on 2 lane roads,... obeying speed limits as they changed down/up as I passed through towns. Then, 2 miles from the interstate, there is a poorly marked speed zone and I get pulled over. Unbelievable. I don't mind getting a ticket if I was knowingly speeding - fair is fair. In this case, I had been diligently looking for speed zones all day and literally did not see any speed limit signs in this area. According to the policeman, there should have been 2 signs: 45mph and then 35mph. If this town was serious about controlling speed for safety reasons (rather than generating revenue through tickets), they should make their speed limit signage more clear. Giving out tickets to tourists will do nothing to control speed. If I were the policeman in this town, I would be embarrassed to be giving tickets for this obvious speed trap.

I completely understand that is a road where the speed limit needs to be under or around 45, but My family and I were driving through Georgiana and got off of I-65 to 106 and seen the 55 speed limit sign but didn't see a sign go any lower than that, which I am sure there was one but it was not clear sight when you are not familiar with that road. So we got pulled over, pulled into the dollar general and the cop came up asked for license and registration, so of sourse my husband handed him the info and he said he would be right back!! Well I am not going into total detail but we got pulled over for speeding and it was a trap and then the officer proceeds to pull my husband out of the car and then brings the canine unit and searches outside of the car, the officer claimed his dog smelt something which I didnt see the dog stop and sit ,bark or anything, so they pulled me and my 6 yr old stepdaughter out of the car and we sit in the back of the cop car meanwhile my husband is standing outside and the officers search the car top to bottom through luggage and all. Let me remind you it is December going on Christmas vacation and of course they find NOTHING.. so all in all we are pulled over harrassed for no reason and they assume something is in the car and all along there is nothing! So i was just curious is the known to happen in this area or was that just our lucky day!!

the new georgiana 55 bypass is a speed trap, often as many as 3 city, sometimes state patrol on this short stretch with no reason for 55 mph speed limit. the state should be ashamed to allow tourist to endure this blatant abuse by small town police to enhance the city revenue.

The new Georgiana 55 bypass is a speed trap. This short stretch of Highway 55 goes from 65 mph to 55 mph to 50 mph quickly (speeds are according to the policeman) in a sparsely populated area. There seems to be no reason for the quick reduction in speed. Our state should be ashamed to allow tourist to fund this small town's coffers by way of speeding tickets in order to enhance the city revenues.
