State Highway 29 near Gwinnett Drive

This is a speed trap and as a mom I understand the need to slow down in a school zone. But this school zone is completely exploited by the local police as a revenue maker. The speed limits on this road go from 35miles to 25 mileswhen flashing(meaning you are entering a school zone) with a 45miles per hour sign on the side of the road at what would apear to mark the end of the school zone. Since it is my experience in this town that usually marks the end of the zone and has a sign posted under the speed limit stating so. An officer on a motorcycly usually parks on a residential road that opens onto hwy 29 that can be slightly hidden by the overgrown canopy of oaks, Magnolias, Snowball Bushes and azaleas. The real kicker hear is you know that school got out at 2:00 and can’t understand why the flashing light is on for 45minutes to an hour after school is over and why arent the police officers at the corner helping the students leave the building and cross the road safely (maybe because there arent any students there and they have already gone home). Secondly why is the school zone marked on hwy 29 when the students and faculty leave the building on Gwinnett Drive. The hwy 29 exit is closed off most of the time due to construction and renovations to the building. What happens is you know the kids are gone for the day, you slow down any way , see the 45 miles per hour sign and speed up and get slammed with a ticket for going 20 miles over the speed limit. Not exactly a fair call if you ask me.

I live a few blocks from this area. This is the most well known spped trap in Lawrenceville. One problem is that going toward Lilburn on hwy 29, the flashing school sign is .2 of a mile before you reach the light at Central Gwinnett High School. You stop for the light and forget about the flashing school sign that you passed 1/4 mile back. Also, if one drives out of Ridgecrest Drive and turns right at this light, he never sees a flashing school sign. There should be a school sign on hwy 29 in front of the school to warn everyone approaching from both direction on hwy 29. I was a few feet ahead of an old friend headed into town one morning when the school sign was flashing. We both came under the flashing sign going approx 25 MPH but there is a slight downhill slope in front of the school. I used my break to maintain 25 MPH because I know the cops issue probably 25-50 tickets/day, maybe more, in this area! My elderly friend did not break. He got up to 26-27 MPH approaching the light and got stopped. He went to traffic court and the judge would not listen to him. This guy has no money. He is a retired missionary and not in good health. In fact he was driving an old car that a friend had given him a few weeks earlier. I felt so sorry for him that I paid the $105.00 ticket for him. I have complained to the city about police activity in this area but they do not listen. This activity goes on five days a week when school is in session for at least an hour in the morning and in the afternoon. I agree that this is a high traffic area and ripe for a serious accident. I personally believe that a good case could be made against the city should an accident occur. Police activity actually increases the risk of an accident here as does the location of the scool signs. Why is there no visible flashing sign in front of the school?? AND, why the hell is there a 45 MPH speed limit sign posted right in front of the school? If you get caught here and can afford a good attorney, I beg you to fight to have this situation corrected before some child is seriously injured or killed.
