State Highway 6

Riesel, TexasSep 10, 20093 Comments

I was driving less than 10 miles over a very low and poorly designated limit of 30 miles per hour on a state highway in this small town. My fine was more than $200, which grew to $681 because I could not make my court date because I live out of state. I have never encountered a higher fine for a small violation or a higher fine for failure to appear. The city then informed my home state DMV, which threatened to suspend my license. The city of Riesel, Texas, has you over a barrel when you’re from out of state and they exploit this to the fullest. It is really outrageous.

Comments:
I have lived outside of Riesel for 23 years. Yes, our police work highway 6. This is necessary because people do not want to slow down as they come thru town. You said you were going 10 miles over the 30 miles per hour speed limit. The speed limit is not 30 on highway 6. If you are traveling north the speed limit is 45 and if you are traveling south it is 55. If you were on FM1860 the speed limit is 30. There are houses and children riding bikes in their neighborhoods on 1860. I don't know of any place where you can get away with driving 10 miles over the posted speed limit. The speed limits are there to protect everyone.

Man how many fines and Fail to Appear charges have you got? It seems you are just sore because you thought you could ignore your ticket in a small town and got bit.

I think the original poster is right. Looks like a whole lot of people have "gotten bitten" here, including many who haven't had tickets for years, if ever. Sure, there will always be real speeders, but I don't think that's the case for stopping most folks here. It's a speed trap, plain and simple.
