State Route 100 near State Highway 100a

Plymouth, VermontMar 18, 20056 Comments

Was stopped because I failed to slow down for a Village speed limit posting…..there is no village here just a gas station & about 50 yards of 35 mph on a 50 mph road. Sheriff cars have been spotted several times at various point on Route 100…caution is advised.

Comments:
We were on vacation in October 2009 and got caught in this same speed trap, officer said little just took license and registration and went to his car and wrote a ticket. Later wrote a letter protesting how it was handled and the fact that there are no warning signs posted in time to slow to 35 mph-- actually the officer was hidden just past 35 mph posted sign. Never had the courtesy of a reply to the letter. We basically wrote Vermont off and have told all our friends to tell everyone going to Vermont to avoid highway 100 and for that matter avoid Vermont.

I can't believe a grown person would right off a state because he/she was CAUGHT speeding. I wouldn't be able to travel thru many sates if I did that. I got caught, paid my fine for being impatient, and learned. Yes most of us all speed and no one likes to get caught, but the posters of this "trap" aren't being completely honest. This sight is great to warn people to slow down so not to get ticketed. That is the reason for patroling. Now, why patrol where there is no village? Within that 1/2 mile stretch, there are entrances to: a SCHOOL, a busy campground, a general store, a ski area (that does events during non ski months), an inn, an intersection that is heavily traveled as it brings you to Calvin Coolidge's homestead (3rd most visited site in VT - lots of busses) and Calin Coolidge State Park, town garage and recycling building, town municipal building, Plymouth historical building, snowmobile crossing, and a number of residential buildings. That sounds like a "village" to me. Sorry if there must be a traffic light for some to think its a village. There are also signs that warn you to 35 speed ahead before the 50. The police (sheriff or state), don't sit just on the other side of the 35 sign (I've seen them). You see this all over the US. So...quit your crying and pay the fine. If you weren't speeding, you wouldn't have been caught. The towns don't run off speeders revenue. And no....I'm not a cop, just someone that drives this road a lot and has seen many accidents, almost been hit, and has pulled a few speeders out of snow banks. Great site though. It will remind me to check my speed more carefully in some areas. Thanks.

Something is going on in this area. Even Wikipedia warns about speed enforcement for Plymouth VT. All the buildings and sites you mention in your comment are not bunched together to make for a dense congested araea. If it walks like a duck, quack likes a duck..... its a speed trap. If I owned a business in this area, I would not like what is going on. Can't be good for business.

The sight distance at the 100A intersection looking south is about 100 feet. There's also an elementary school. Also the speed zone is about a mile long, not "50 yards". And yes, somebody got a speeding ticket here and thought it was worth putting on Wikipedia.

I understand being defensive toward your neighborhood and offended by the opinions of outsiders. However, today I was ticketed going 47 in the 35 mph zone that is referenced above. Yes, I missed the signs indicating the slowdown from the posted 50 mph. I am 50 years old, a cautious driver, and have never been ticketed even after traveling through all 50 states. I had no idea why I was pulled over. I was in complete control of my vehicle and was probably not driving 47 mph. None of the hazards mentioned above by the previous author were occurring. No school kids, no snowmobliles, no busses. What WAS happening was a busy holiday weekend with vulnerable tourists like myself all sitting ducks for the officer to ticket. Once in Ludlow, a half-dozen locals confirmed to me that this same officer was well known and tickets people at that location all day long. My sister-in-law is buying a condo nearby, so I plan to be sure that she and her guests all know that Plymouth is a speed trap. I will go back to Vermont regardless of this event, but I will be sure to give Plymouth at least $125 worth of bad publicity (the cost of my ticket). Maybe some locals should speak to the Sherriff and tell him to stop poaching tourists and start looking for real bad guys.
