State Route 17 near State Route 24

Plainly marked cars are always parked with radar running constantly.

This is definitely a speed trap. Georgia has a speed trap law in place to prevent this, but they do have everything marked as required by law. Among other things, the law says no one other than the GA State Patrol may write a radar speeding ticket if you are within 10 MPH of the posted limit... So they are running a "legal speed trap". The "city of Oliver" is less than one square mile, has only a couple hundred residents, but has several individuals that play "cop" for them..... There is no justification for the 35MPH zone they have created. It is the only such zone on Hwy 17 between Savannah and Wrens GA. They give you a phone number you can call between 4 and 8PM, M-F to find out what your fine is, and not by the offense, but by your ticket number.... They also only hold "court" from 4-8PM on whatever day you are assigned. I went back during the day and requested to see their radar certifications and they REFUSED me... Also refused to give me the name of the "Judge". They said I would find that out when I returned for court... which I'm sure almost no one does, due to how inconvenient they make it. They told me I could mail my request to see the radar certs to the city attorney, who also happens to be the Judge....again, no name... My ticket for "supposedly" doing 51 in a 35 was $260.00. I don't understand how the cop could tell when I had passed the 35MPH sign since he was several hundred ft in front of me, facing the same direction I was traveling. Anyone else that has a similar situation should contact the GA Attorney General's office and the Secretary of State's office and push to have their radar permit revoked. The state legislature should also enact a requirement that speed limits be set and or approved by the state Dept of Transportation to keep these BS situations from occurring. What we though would be a leisurely drive down Hwy 17 from Savannah to Augusta that Sunday was ruined. Never again... This is one more person they will never get another dime out of. Never again will I drive Hwy 17. Sorry to all the other respectable towns where I might have stopped to get gas or a bite to eat or drink!

I am so glad that I found this website. And I am LMAO at the number of posts to Oliver's speedtrap. All of the surrounding counties know of this trap and know of Barney Fife sitting in front of the post office. If you are heading west or is it north on Hwy. 17 coming from the Savannah direction, you do see a sign just outside the city limits of Oliver that states in bold lettering that you are about to enter a speed trap. I think it was erected by locals. There is not a redlight but stop signs crossing old highway 17 in the center of Oliver where the crossroads are. There may be a yellow caution light facing both ways of 17 with a red caution light at the stop signs. I'm not sure. But anyway, Barney is always there unless he is home eating. This poor slob puts in many hours taking your money. I have to congratulate him for his tireless efforts. My wife and I have to go through Oliver to get to her sisters in Newington. Believe me, we know to slow down when entering the money pit. To Barney it is probably a honey pot. LOL. This trap should have been on the National Motorist Associations top ten list for speed traps this year and past years too. Ya'll be good out there and say Hi to Barney for me.
