Sturgis Road near Hidden Valley Road

Rapid City, South DakotaMar 28, 20051 Comments

Beware of South Dakota Highway Patrol and Pennington County Sheriff’s Dept. speedtraps on the stretch of Highway 79 North (better known as Sturgis Rd. or Black Hawk Rd.) between Rapid City and Black Hawk. Usually they work this area heavily on Friday & Saturday nights. Most often they set up near the Hidden Valley Rd. intersection, but they often turn up anywhere between the bowling ally and Black Hawk. The speed limits on this road are ridiculously slow.

Comments:
This road is used as a speed trap primarily when traveling from west to east. Through the town of Black Hawk the speed limit is 55 mph and when you leave Black Hawk to continue on the road the speed limit drops to 50 mph. My inattention to this fact caused me to get a ticket a couple of years back. Who would have thought that speed limit would be reduced when leaving a municipality to an uninhabited stretch of highway.
