U S Highway 231, within city limits, north and south

Cottondale, FloridaOct 29, 20022 Comments

City of 3,000 depends on fines for city budget. Roadway is six lanes wide, level with 35 mph limit. Conditions would warrant higher conditions. Officer cites 55 mph in 35 mph even if speed was well below. I was at 46 (digital) and cited for 55. Although my state (Georgia) does not require auto tag registration to be physically in automobile, Florida law does. They do not care what your home state laws are. Possibly, the discussion over tag registration contributed to the increase of speed on the citation; however I believe it was revenue enhancement and nothing more. It certainly was not necessary for traffic control. Unless your route demands travel through this city, it is best to use an alternate route. If you must go through, drop to 20 mph (or less) at city limits and do not accelerate until past the outbound city limits. Better slow (and safe) than sorry. PURPLE HEART tag did not carry much weight with this county mountie.

Comments:
I was out of state as well and the cop gave me a hard time about vehicle registration even though I told him over and over again it wasn't required. I do not believe I was going 55 in a 35 mile zone, and agree this is only a revenue generation and US citizens are totally been taken advantage of. What I don't understand is how its allowed to happen, to change speed limits in such a short period of time and the officers put what they want on the ticket.

yeah, I was on 231 in cottondale. I have a radar detector and know exactly where he shot me. I had been telling my 16 year old son that I had been going through this city for 20 years and to slow down. I was 100 feet from the 35mpg sign and got hit. I was going 40 in the 35!! In Georgia it is illegal to radar withing 500 feet of the speed change. I dont even care if it is a speed trap but I was not speeding and I have two witnesses. he shot the radar at 6 cars and one of us was going 53 in a 35 but it wasnt me. they should only use lasar to verify they got the right person. It is obvious all they want is the revenue. there is no concern for public safety. the ticket cost me 252. dollars. I will be complaining to the attorney general.
