U.S. Route 60 Eastbound

Gauley Bridge, West VirginiaJan 18, 20101 Comments

If you are traveling East on U.S. Route 60 you will be on a short stretch of highway which is 4 lane just west of the city. There is a state police detachment on your left and the four lane becomes 2 lane at the intersection of Route 39 and U.S. Route 60. If you stay on U.S. Route 60 and cross the bridge across Gauley river, make sure you are at 45mph before you cross that bridge because there is a big wide area at the end of the bridge on your right and the Gauley bridge city cop is there every morning unless he is up the road with a capture.

I don’t know this officer but he must be real popular because he gets a lot of company while he sits there. Walk up pedestrians, state police, and numerous private vehicles. I haven’t really been able to put my finger on the mystery but for a couple years I’ve thought maybe he was also the judge and held court in his car at the described location.

Comments:
Actually the speed limit drops to 45 on Rt 60 just past the State Police detachment. There is usually a cop sitting right there to catch speeders going either way. I was ticketed because I hit 55 one tenth of a mile before the speed increased while traveling west. Another time I was stopped and told that the cop had passed me on the bridge as I was going east and that I was speeding. Neither me nor my passenger saw him go past us in the opposite direction. The total burn for both tickets was $150.00. When I have to go that way I drop to 5 under the limit before the speed changes and don't speed up until I ma well into the increased speed zone. I live a few miles from this speed trap.
