US Highway 1 near Rest Area

Kennebunk, MaineJul 05, 20041 Comments

Driving North on Rt. 1 from Wells, the speed limit drops from 50 to 35 finally to 25. The 25 mph zone begins at the rest area. Kennebunk Police often stop cars here. The Kennebunk Police Department either rewards or punishes their officers based on the amount of stops they make. Officers are constantly threatened with being moved to less desirable shifts or other sanctions if they don’t "hit their numbers". This particular trap is a sure bet for easy traffic stops.

Comments:
The comment made about officers being "sanctioned" or threatened with being moved to another shift is patently untrue. The current department under a new Chief is not run that way. Route 1 is a state road and has state-created speed limits. The Town is obligated to enforce the speed laws as maintained on these roads. Officers do not have quotas or mandatory ticket numbers to run. Kennebunk officers, as officers in all the other towns in southern Maine, have an obligation to enforce the State-run speed limits as well as the limits created for the town roads and side roads, including the roads with schools on them, where your own children could be at risk due to speeding cars. Slow down, obey the limits, and stop whining.
