US Highway 101 Oregon Coast Hwy near 8th Street

Port Orford, OregonFeb 04, 20053 Comments

North Bound on Hwy 101 into Port Orford, Oregon. Hwy 101 in Port Orford (30 mph) has a curvature around and past 8th Street with exposure to a 20 mph school zone. The signs are ~500 feet from 8th Street and you have about 10 seconds to see the signs. Hopefully your view of the signs will not be obstructed by other traffic.

Comments:
And before the curvature mentioned, traffic passes one sign warning of a 45 zone, then the 45 zone, then a sign warning of a thirty zone, and the sign for the 30. There is sufficient time to slow down if you have read and observed the posted signs.

Port Orford has hired a new Police Chief who has vastly improved the morale of the community as compared to the previous Chief. However, Port Orford is the poorest city in the poorest county in Oregon, with many inhabitants subsisting on food stamps and welfare payments, and badly needs traffic ticket revenue. They have budgeted $168,000 to add to their 2010 budget through traffic tickets. This is a city of about 1000 people and have 6 police and probably as many hand-me-down surplus police cars discarded from more affluent citys. In other words, the one mile stretch of HWY 101 through Port Orford is their life blood. It is a tempting stretch to speed through as the highway opens up to 4 lanes through town after mostly two lane for 25 miles approaching from north or south. Simply slow down traveling through and take the 2 minutes to travel through and avoid the city and an expensive ticket.

How about creating an attraction in the town for revenue rather than screwing over someone's driving record over nonsense speeding violations. Put in a stop sign if you want pedestrian safety for crossing the highway. If it wasn't a speed trap, then why do the cops hide with their radar guns ready to go? This isn't about public safety whatever bozo tried to make that case...
