US Highway 287, entering Campo, Colorado

Campo, ColoradoJan 03, 20136 Comments

Speed quickly drops from 65 to 30 as you enter the town. In addition to ensuring you slow down to no more than 30 mph, don’t allow your slowing down to put you too close to the unmarked Campo Police White SUV going down the same road at a decreased speed. The cop will stop you for following too closely. Following too closely is a larger fine than a speeding ticket there, worth more points on your driving record, and then as mentioned before, the town of Ocampo runs some racket there where you can pay double the fine to keep it off your record. Bottom line is that the whole 0.1 mile long stretch of Hwy 287 that goes through the town is nothing more than a speed trap. Chief of police is a prick, who begins his introduction with, “I ticket everyone I stop.”

Comments:
I was looking at the area and the speed limit starts dropping about a mile before it is into the 30 zone. (65 down to 55 down to 45 down to 30 then a 30 to a 45 that goes for a mile then to 65)( this is going south through town) going north it goes (65 down to 40 down to 30 in about a mile then a second 30 to a 45 to a 55 to a 65) I talked to the chief, sgt, and officer and by records shows 99% are for speeding 10mph and above the speed limit. following too close causes accidents and they will write for that to. in this area you have residential, business, school district, kids, elderly persons and cross streets on both sides of us 287. The speed limits are set by the state on this Highway. I see nothing wrong with the information I obtained. It is nice to know that these fine officers do this job for the reason I wouldn't want to because of the people that sometimes are contacted. (they have a job just like everyone else)

I got pulled over by the chief of police and I must say I didn't like it, I can understand the badge (firm, Fair, Friendly) and he is very direct I would go back anytime but not speed. (Texas)

I am glad to see a town invest in the Police. To many Crazy drivers need to be stopped. If you don't watch the road you could kill some kid. This town is a great place to go through and I will stop again but not get stopped by the cop again. (ok)

if you follow to close to a vehicle you should get a ticket ( I hate being tail gated)

I passed through Campo last month. This is definitely a speed trap. I saw the 30 mph sign and the police car as I topped the hill into town at the same time. I started slowing immediately. He turned his lights on and off briefly as I topped the hill. In my home state of Tennessee that is interpretted as a notice to slow down. If you do slow down, no problem. He waited till I had passed him by a half block or so before turning his lights on again(presumably after he had time to see my out-of-state plates). And I certainly recognize the Chief's "I ticket everyone I stop." opening line.

Ranked by 9news as having 90% of town revenues coming from tickets! Slow down to 30 MPH before entering town. You have been warned.
