Written 1 Oct 2007 — Ocala PD conducts primary traffic enforcement on all City streets. Active enforcement is evident especially in construction zones and school zones. OPD has a specific (and very active) traffic enforcement division. Generally OPD does not work radar on I-75. There have been rare instances when a selective traffic enforcement program (STEP) is worked on the interstate, usually early mornings on a weekend, especially Sunday. Approximately 70% of OPD units have radars. They are digital readout of various types and vintages, but all moving. Many have only one antenna, situated near the driver and facing forward. Most predominately they use Kustom brand. OPD uses unmarked units for traffic enforcement. However, most are marked units, many do not have roof lights. They also have quite a few motorcycles, which are equipped with handheld radar or some have laser. Generally they are not used at night or in bad weather. OPD is famous for hiding in vulnerable spots, usually near schools. (You should be driving slow there anyway) Note: While situated to work radar, many units also observe stop signs or �no left turn� stop lights, of which there are many. Fairly often on the major roads in and out of Ocala, you will see Florida Highway Patrol and Marion County Sheriff units usually in transit. Many of them also use moving radar and will write a ticket. FHP has been observed many times with a radar stop inside the city limits.
