West Broad Street/ Atlanta Highway (crossing the bridge over the Middle Oconee River)

Athens, GeorgiaApr 29, 20021 Comments

West Broad Street becomes Atlanta highway as it passes the Howard Johnson’s hotel and crosses the Middle Oconee River bridge. By this point, the road is six lanes wide with a 12-foot-wide median — and a speed limit of 40. The cops like to sit in the parking lot of the KMart as you approach the new Epps Bridge Parkway interchange, and point their radar down at cars traveling westbound across the bridge. Before you cross the bridge, you head down a long hill which helps you build up speed, making it easy for Athens-Clarke County cops to make a killing off speeding tickets in this area.

Comments:
The cops now (2014) sit in the entrance to the Robins Federal Credit Union, which is right at the entrance to the old K-Mart across from Old Epps Bridge Road. The old K-Mart in now Hobby Lobby. On a recent evening just past the middle of the month, when was traffic light around 10:00PM there were three (3) cop cars taking relay turns reeling the unsuspecting motorists. This evidently is a real sweet spot for cops to fill out their ticket quotas for the month, as evidenced by three cops cars taking turns! This is a despicable practice as nearly everybody exceeds the posted limit momentarily on this long downhill with no eminent safety hazards.
