Anacortes, Washington Speed Traps

There is a small view point on the eastbound spur of Highway 20 into Anacortes. Local police and WSP like to park here at take speed readings on eastbound traffic. Slow down at the left hand curve before the view point comes into view.

Padilla Hts Rd South of – and under – SR 20 bridge, and West of traffic circle. Speed posted at 30 MPH by a very small and hard-to-see sign just inside the Swinomish Reservation boundary. Swinomish Tribal Police operate a readar trap near the sign. No warnings if speed is 10 MPH over limit. (Rationale: "They’re getting ready to build a Wal-Mart here, so we’re trying to get people used to slowing down.") Normal speed limits elsewhere in vicinity, by the way, are in the 35 – 40 mph range.

Heavy enforcement by the Tribal Police, County and State. 3 officers common, have seen as many as 6 during tourist season. Both marked and unmarked cruisers, and motorcycles.

City police sit at various locations leading up to and around the 2 right angle turns where D Avenue becomes A Avenue. I have seen them at four different locations here. The posted limit is 30 and changes from 40 northbound at the south end of the leg. Suggestion – go 30 mph.

It is typically focused on northbound traffic desending the hill. At times there can be up to three state troopers.
