Los Banos, California Speed Traps
Intersection at Canyon Rd on I-5 North
Going North the Speed limit is 70mph on I-5 at the Canyon intersection . The grade is downhill and straight. When the wind is at your back it can push your car well over the speed limit easily and very smoothly without you noticing and you don’t have to depress the gas pedal.
State Highway 165 between Interstate 5 and Los Banos
Merced County Sheriff officers park on Almond Road to get a clear view of Highway 165 traffic. They "estimate" how fast cars are driving, based on their "experience." Then they write up drivers for speeding in the 55 mph zone.
This is a flat, straight, wide road just off Interstate 5, where the speed limit is 70 mph. The sheriff deputies use this spot as a money generator for their county.
State Highway 152 near Interstate 5
High volume of CHP between I-5 and Casa de Fruita on 152. Almost always a CHP or Sheriff car running between Los Banos and Gilroy.
State Hwy. 152
Frequent and only route of travel between Central CA and San Jose/Silicon Valley. High commuter rate, and very frequent speed limit changes ranging from as high as 65 to as low as 30. Cops on every corner, and chances are if you stop at a convenience store for any reason, you’ll be pulled over upon exit with them checking to see if you’ve purchased alcohol. 55 is the limit primarily until you hit Los Banos…it’s 65 coming off Hwy. 99 onto Hwy. 152. I know people who have been cited for going 58 in a 55.
