Ranch Road 12 approximately 1.5 miles west of I-35   San Marcos, Texas

When traveling eastbound on Ranch Rd. 12 from Canyon Lake/Wimberley, the road, as very common in the area, is a 2-lane that curves sharply with many rises and dips throughout the hilly countryside, and despite the limited view and the presence of scattered buildings and driveways/sideroads, the speed limit is consistently 60 MPH. Just a few miles west of San Marcos, that road splits into a brand new divided 4-lane, much smoother and straighter with guardrails and no hint of civilization. If you are depending on a GPS that hasn't been upgraded, you may miss the speed limit sign while pondering the screen as you watch your intended route drift off to your left and showing you are not on a road at all! Do not depend on intuition though, because although any reasonable driver would perceive the conditions of this road to be 60 or even 65, it's 55! And that's where they get you. As you crest a low hill just in time to view a glimpse of the town, they're waiting, and they stay plenty busy. They will not listen to reason, and they're very rude. Rest assured, this trap has nothing to do with public safety, but is a convenient and corrupt opportunity for this town to generate revenue. It may as well be a super highway for grannies and farm equipment.

CR266 between Redwood and TX80   San Marcos, Texas

Half of this open country road is 40, then abruptly drops to 30mph at the river crossing. I used to drive this road every day, and saw a motorcycle cop hiding in the bushes every day. A constable usually patrols the 40mph half.

Redwood road between CR266 and TX123   San Marcos, Texas

This road was 45mph until about a year ago. They resurfaced it and added a turn lane (even though there is no place to turn off of the road) and dropped the limit to 40. I know folks that have been tagged for 45 on this stretch. Big money maker for the county.

River Road near Harris Hill/Aquarena Springs Roads   San Marcos, Texas

This stretch is a back road that is well-traveled in San Marcos. It is scenic and a short-cut to and from outer parts of the city. It is enforced by Hays County Sheriffs on motorcycles and in chargers. The posted speed is 30mph--an abrupt drop from 40 with on sign either way. It is also enforced during PM rush as theere is high peak traffic due to the Job Corps Center shifts. They are not lenient and are posted in a yard where they can laser over the hill.

McCarty Lane near Hunter Road   San Marcos, Texas

The problem is that the speed limit is 40 on a road that goes primarily through wooded areas without residences. The road is good, and natural speed without thinking is 50. When a cop needs to meet his ticket quota, he comes out to McCarty and preys on moms taking their kids to school in the morning or comes out in the afternoon to catch whom he can. McCarty Lane is a money maker, and the unrealistic speed limit out in this country setting assures it.

Speeding Tickets

You deserve every speeding ticket you get. You can complain all you want after the fact, but it's true.
Find out why.

It's one of the "great" American past times: complaining about unfair speeding tickets. There are two types of people when it comes to complaining about this particular type of traffic ticket. Which group are you in?
