US Highway 27   Lumpkin, Georgia

Beware US Highway 27 Lumpkin, Stewart county Georgia: Speed trap operated by the city of Lumpkin. Lumpkin has annexed into the city limits a portion of highway (about one half a mile) for the purpose of generating revenue from traffic fines. What makes this so sinister and truly a speed trap is that US Highway 27 is nothing but rolling hills covered in scrub pines in this area with no hint of residential or commercial development. Nothing! US Highway 27 at this point is a full four lane highway with a wide grass medium. Approaching from the south there is road widening in progress, just as you approach Lumpkins speed trap, a DOT sign announces End of Work Area and a 55 MPH speed limit sign. Within just a few hundred feet is a small green sign, Lumpkin City Limits, followed by a 45 MPH speed limit sign. US Highway 27 at this point is a full four lane highway with a wide grass medium. This highway is built for 70 plus MPH. A speed limit of 55 to 65 would be a very conservative speed in this area. Your grandmother would not expect a 45 MPH limit in this rural area. This is were the Lumpkin Law lay in wait to ambush law biding citizens as they travel through this most depressed area of Georgia.

Find out why.

It's one of the "great" American past times: complaining about unfair speeding tickets. There are two types of people when it comes to complaining about this particular type of traffic ticket. Which group are you in?
