State Highway 160/550 near State Highway 550

Durango, ColoradoJun 07, 20071 Comments

As 550/160 come together on the east outskirts of Durango, cars heading west will round a big bend. As the road straightens out going into Durango there is a well-hidden frontage road to the right where the police (State, County & Municipal set a trap). The speed limit is 50 mph through this corrider but it easy to exceed the speed limit b/c of the merge of traffic that is taking place between 160/550.

Eastbound Highway 160 into Durango is downhill with reduction in speed limit signs posted in rapid succession. The Durango police car was traveling west bound on Hwy 160 and passed me as I was going Hwy160 eastbound. The police u-turned and pulled me over for a speeding ticket 1-2 minutes later.

550/160 northbound entering city limits

Durango, ColoradoNov 01, 20010 Comments

Speed limit lowers immediately to 50 mph as you enter the city limits northbound on 160/550. City police write tickets for less than 5 mph above the posted limits anywhere in town. Within city limits, maximum is 25 mph unless otherwise posted. Especially target out-of-state licenses, since tourists don’t return to fight expensive tickets for minor violations. (Particularly unfair, because this is a town supported by tourist industry.) Similar trap exists on 160 entering city limits from the west.
