Merriam, Kansas Speed Traps
W.67th Street near Road East of Switzer
Merriam PD sits at the bottom of the hill on 67th Street, across from the used car lot and Animal Haven. The officers usually look for vehicles speeding down the hill. By the time you see them it will be too late. Heads up!
Shawnee Mission Parkway near Mastin Street
Merriam PD tends to sit on the exit ramps from Merriam Dr onto SM Parkway. Speed enforcement is very heavy through here, and I’ve been pulled over several times. It’s very hard to see their patrol cars, especially at night. Speed limit is 45 through there, so be very careful. They sometimes sit in the Long John Silvers Parking lot, waiting to catch speeders traveling Westbound on Shawnee Mission Pkwy.
5300 block Merriam Lane
Supposedly, a policeman either in a marked or unmarked police car sits with a laser in the Rieke’s Landing parking lot, tags you. Then about 1 block up the street there are cones and a cop in the middle of the road that waves you into an empty lot, where 6 police cars and cones are set up. You drive to a waiting officer who, suprise, gives you a ticket for speeding. Then you go to fight it, the case gets continued twice because the laser cop can’t appear, but you aren’t told until you’ve sat there in court for two hours, and ultimately, at your "go" trial, the judge sides for the Merriam police and gives you your ticket for 11 miles over the speed limit anyway, giving you some baloney about maybe your speedometer was malfunctioning, and if it wasn’t the speedometer malfunctioning, it must have been your tires were the wrong size, even tho they werent….
