South Kingstown PD is an elite fighting force that is specially trained in the art of ticket writing and harassment of out-of-staters. They stop the most amount of cars in the state BY FAR, and most of the town is an incredibly low 25 mph zone. Their favorite spots are on 138 near URI (where the road is straight and one can safely travel at 45+), the entire length of 108, and US 1 near Wakefield where the limit drops without warning from 50 to 40. They have all the latest and greatest equipment (including laser), and have multiple traps set up at all times of the day. Their main prey are the URI students commuting back and forth to Narragansett along 108 and all the out-of-state tourists. On one occasion last summer, an officer admitted to me that he pulled me over simply for DWOS (driving while outside the state). I told him that I did not see the border checkpoint. He warned me that my attitude would not earn me any breaks in his small town, checked my license, and sent me on my way.
