Hwy 76 west out of Marion

Marion, South CarolinaSep 16, 20210 Comments

Traveling through Marion, SC on hwy 76, on a Sunday morning at approximately 8:00 am going to work in Hartsville, SC. I was the only auto on the road that morning except for a white SUV, unmarked of course, that was following me all the way through town. I was going through town, stopping at every light and as I was going out of town headed west on hwy 76, I was in a 35 mph zone, I could see the 45 mph sign coming up so I speeded up to 48 mph as I passed the sign. The white SUV, unmarked of course, turned on the blue light and pulled me over. The plain clothes officer said I was speeding 48 mph in a 35 mph zone. So I said “I could see the 45 mph sign so I speeded up”. The plain clothes officer informed me that “It is not 45 mph until you get to the sign”. So I contacted the towns attorney on Monday, naturally I am an out of state driver, and told him what had happen. Long story short, $280.00 dollars later, the speeding ticket was taken care of.

On 501 bypass from 41 to Penderboro Road, Unmarked Mustang from the city of Marion, they hide in a field near hwy 41 or at the other end by the electric company. The use glasses to pick out out-of-state cars. He writes anywhere from 100 to 150 tickets a week. This is not city limits, I was told they have a deal with the sheriff dept to write tickets there. This is a speed trap if there ever was one, This is a main road to Myrtle Beach.

As you come into Marion from the west the speed limit goes from 55 to 45 to 35. Just as it goes to 35 the road curves slightly to the right. The city radar cop sits on the left, which is out of your line of sight until you make the curve, then he’s got ya.
Since economic development in Marion county is difficult I suspect that traffic (speeding) fines make up a substantial portion of this city’s income.

US Highway 76 near US Highway 501

Marion, South CarolinaMar 28, 20060 Comments

Marion is a relatively small town. It has two US highways passing through perpendicular to each other. US hwy 76 is a four lane passing through a commercial area and is posted at 35mph. It is a tourist pathway to Myrtle Beach SC. It is constantlt patrolled by unmarked cars with radar. If you go 38 you will get a ticket, no doubt about it.
