I- 95 & Yemassee Hwy

Yemassee, South CarolinaSep 16, 20091 Comments

Anywhere in and around Yemassee, SC it is a speed trap. The town’s income depends on speeders. On I-95, at one exit north of I-95 and Yemassee Hwy Yemassee Police stand on the bridge over I-95 with speed gun. At the I-95 and Yemassee Hwy, Police Cars are lined up to pull over vehicles going south on I-95. Also, downtown Yemassee on Hwy 17 and 21 you can be pulled over barely going over the speed limit. For example, they will tell the driver that he/she was clocked at 58 in a 45 mph zone. I was only going 47. The Yemassee Police wrote on the ticket that I was in a 40 mph zone. Make sure you thoroughly review the ticket for accuracy before the officer leaves. The fine was $180. As you exit Yemassee going out of town (toward Hampton or Beaufort) the speed limits increase. As you increase the speed at the edge of the jurisdiction, they get you doing one mile an hour over.

Entering Yemassee,SC on US-17Alt/US-21, officer sits in location to see road at entrance to town. A turn in road obscures first buildings, leaving a speed limit sign 1/2 mile from town on long straight road. Ticket is written because you did not slow car before S.L. sign. This town has 800 residents, and at least 5 uniformed officers and one Deputy Sheriff. On Dec 20, there were more than 100 people in traffic court and others simply paying fines. The town residents laugh and say "Where is the Traffic Court?" is the most frequent question they are asked.

US Highway 17A

As you leave town going south on 17A you enter an area you would think the speed limit of 55 is resumed. Wrong. High enforcement, no warnings given, still 35 mph past the last buildings, into the country! Like to hide in an old gas station. Note. SC doubles the fine as an assessment and adds a handling fee, so most fines are extremely high.
