Bristol, Virginia Speed Traps
Benhams Rd. at Shiloh Baptist Church
Both county and state officers will sit in the Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church parking lot and catch speeders coming down the blind hill from the north. They also use this location frequently for mandatory license checks.
East side of exit 1-A off of I-81
The speed limit off of exit ramp 1-A is immediatley reduced to 45 MPH. After you cross the interstate going east, hidden at the bottom of the hill is a 35 MPH sign and the cops actually park behind the sign and run radar. you don’t have a chance to slow down. I got a ticket for only doing 45 MPH. I called the department to complain. Talked to a Capt. Radcliff. He was nice, but said they run radar at that spot all the time….safety is the excuse.
Exit 10 overhead
Sheriff’s Deputies stand atop Exit 10 bridge and uses laser. Radios speed to as many as 6-10 waiting chase cars. Can be used on North and South bound sides.
I-81, Exit 3 to Commonwealth Avenue
As you exit the southbound lane of I-81 at Exit 3 to travel into Bristol on Commonwealth Avenue, the speed limit is 55 MPH. After you leave I-81, the highway makes a wide, sweeping curve to the right and there is often a City Police car just beyond that curve to check your speed.
Interstate 81 near Exit Number 10
State troopers will sit either in the median, which if you are going southbound is hidden by a small hill until you have actually passed the trooper, or the will be on the side of the oncoming Exit 10 ramp going northbound. You won’t see that trooper until you have passed the ramp either, so when traveling past Exit 10(either north or southbound) make sure you are going the speed limit!
