Emporia, Virginia Speed Traps
Highway 58
Local police sit off Hwy 58, supposedly using their radar, but if you request to see the radar gun with the speed displayed, they refuse, citing some Virginia legal precident. Furthermore, you may want to know that the police also claim that it is a violation of Emporia police policy to show the accused a corroborating spped on the radar gun (how convenient!). Folks, it’s not enough to drive the speed limit, as I can attest from personal experience. If you have out-of-state plates, avoid Emporia like the plague.
VA 158 East at Reese Street Bridge
City police sits in the median on the east end of the Reese Street bridge on VA 158 facing west. Eastbound traffic beware!!!
Route 58
Just a note – if you are willing to take the time to fight a ticket and you are from out of state you can bargain it down to 9 miles over the limit by just showing up, generally. All you have to do is agree to pay the initial fine!
Extending in both directions from the entrance to I-95
The cruisers are usually in the median. You don’t see them until it’s too late, so just GO SLOW in this area. It might add another 5 mins but it will save you some money.
I-95
parked in shoulder just past offramp to town at foot of long hill.
