Lincoln, Nebraska Speed Traps
Superior Street near Grandview Lane
Grandview Lane is located about a block west of 14th St. It’s a little gravel road that leads to a white church which is situated directly on Superior street. There is usually at least one cop (I’ve seen up to 3) standing on that corner around the lunch rush hour.
14th Street near Thunderbird Avenue
Officers are often hiding either on Thunderbird or one of the other roads between Pine Lake and Thunderbird on 14th street. They usually are enforcing there in the mornings and late afternoons. It is a pretty common place to see them. They are hard to spot because they are often out on foot with the radar.
State Highway Cornhusker near 11th Street
There is an overpass around 11th and Cornhusker. If you are coming into to town from the West they usually sit on the bottom of the overpass as you come over it. The speed limit is 40, but traffic usually (and safely!) flows around 50 miles per hour. In addition to this there is occasionally not a cop car to be seen and the officer is on the side of the road with a hand-held radar. In my experience the officer jumped out in front of my car when I was going 50 mph. This scared me and he came really close to getting hit–fortunately when I swerved into the other lane to avoid him there wasn’t any traffic in that lane at the time! I contacted the Lincoln Police Department and was informed that it was(!) there policy to step in front of moving vehicles in order to stop them to issue a citation!
North 48th Street near Leighton Avenue
Lincoln police officers will often set up a speed trap just one block north of 48th & Leighton. They will be using hand-held radar guns and clocking cars in a transitional area where the speed limit increases from 25 mph to 35 mph, usually trying to nail cars who are speeding up just a little too soon. There is a 2 block area with shops along the 4-lane street where the speed limit is 25 mph, which is unneccessarily slow, as traffic would flow just fine through that area if it was a 35 mph speed limit.
13th coming off Hwy 2 Street near US Highway 2 Nebraska Hwy
At the intersection of 13th and Hwy 2, there is a small off-ramp leading on to 13th St. The speed limit drops from 45 to 35, and the lanes go from 2 to 1. There is a curve, and when you come around the curve there are police clocking your speed. You can’t see them until you get around the curve, and then it’s usually too late!
