Stringtown, Oklahoma Speed Traps
US Highway 69
Stringtown was one of the worst speedtraps in Oklahoma and due to its reputation the highway department raised the speed limit on US 69 from 45 to 60. Even with the raised limits this small town of less then 1000 people maintain a "fleet" of unmarked police cars and on any given day when your driving north or south on US69 you can see one of Stringtown’s patrol cars either in pursuit of or issuing speeding tickets. Its no longer as bad as it was but fair warning to all motorists… Stringtown is still a speed trap. Post Script… only miles down the road is another trap… Kiowa Oklahoma.
US Highway 69 / 75 near city limit signs
The speed limit is 70 until you get to the city limit sign that is in place where you hardly notice because of other the signs around it and it’s well out-of town. The speed limit sign is a good 1/4 mile from the city limit sign and if you are southbound the speed limit sign is blocked by tree limbs so the local P.D. sits on a side road within sight of the tree & sign waiting for speeders. (mostly big trucks)The town is small, but so spread out that you don’t know you are in a town. Slow down and don’t get rowdy with’em because the prison is just north of town but in the city limits!
Hiway 69-75
Stringtown is one of a dozen cities in Oklahoma where, over 50% of the city budget, is from traffic fines. A couple of cities receive over 70% of its budget from traffic fines. All of this info is according to a research of city audit reports by the state’s major newspaper and reported on 12/29/02. So, is it still about safety?
On US 69 about 15 miles north of Atoka.
The Stringtown police watch for violators from locations well off the highway and will not be waiting for you along side the of the road. They have zero tolerance and will pull you over for the slightest violation. The limit changes quickly from the normal 70 to 65 and 60 while passing through this place. The town is hardly noticable from the highway with only a gas station and a dinner spread out along a couple of miles of road that pass through the city limits. Watch for and observe the signs. They’ll be watching for you. Take care.
