US Highway 26 West near State Highway 8

Beaverton, OregonMay 13, 20060 Comments

Located west of the Highway 8 (Canyon Road) exit, at the onramp from the US 26 truck lane and the Sylvan exit. A Beaverton city cop will park his car at the merge point. He points various forms of radar at cars coming up the hill from the zoo and tunnel. The freeway is 50 mph to this point, but goes to 55 mph immediately after the merge. Most cars are already doing 60+ mph by the time they reach this point. Others who obey the speed limit speed up early in anticipation of the increased speed. Either way, this merge point is a perfect blind spot for a cop to hide from you until it’s too late.

SW Western Avenue near Allen Boulevard

The Beaverton Police have a van that they go around with to catch people speeding. They frequently put their van on Western Avenue just before the intersection with Allen Boulevard. They are supposed to put out signs that say ‘entering a photo radar zone’ or something to that effect, but the signs are small and this particular area has a lot of overgrowth on the side of the road which makes it so you cannot actually see the sign. They also park the van in the middle of a bunch of trees and bushes, so you cannot see it either until you are right on top of it. I have not personally gotten a ticket because I am aware that they are there and drive extra-careful, but I have spoken with many people who have gotten tickets in this area. I believe the posted speed limit is 25 miles per hour, but a more reasonable limit would be about 35. (P.S. you guys have an extra check box in the ‘type of enforcement field– there are 5 options and 6 checkboxes.)

It is usually a BPD photo radar van and is there only when its too dark to see it. You won’t see the LCD display of your speed until it is almost too late, since they put it Right in front of the van.
