Oakland, Tennessee Speed Traps

They reduct the speed limit on highway 64 to 45 miles per hour several miles before actually entering the town. After leaving the town, you have to remain at 45 miles per hour for a couple of miles. When they have traffic court, they have about a dozen officers and over a hundred ticketed drivers.

Traffic entering the City of Oakland is constantly checked in a 65 mph zone that rapidly decreases from 65 to 55 then to 45. Often the officer is in the oncoming traffic lane and writes citations to motorist who are driving within the posted speed. There is no prosecuter but the judge acts as the cities attorney. Discovery of evidence, i.e. officers notes, is not allowed. Fines are excessive and a major source of revenue for the city.

I was comming into Oakland from the west and I saw the officer aproching a turn around between the 4 lanes I saw the reduce speed signs and made sure I was doing 45 in the 45 mph zone. When he pulled me over he said he clocked me at 64 at the top of the hill. I said so I was doing 64 in 55 no he said you were doing 64 in 45 the 45 mph zone started at the bottom of the hill. I don’t think it matters how fast you are going your going to get a ticket.

The signs change constantly and the cop waits in front of or behind within a few feet of the speed change. I heard my entire 35 years of life Oakland Tn. is a speed trap and can tell you first hand it is deffinately is. I know very many that has had tickets in my town and were over an hour away!

I live 1 hour east Oakland. Almost everyone I know in my community has recieved a ticket in this speedtrap. The officers usually target cars with out of town plates. The speed limit drops from 65 to 55 to 45 in a very short distance. The court system is a joke. I will never spend any money in this town as long as these speed traps continue. Oakland is by far the worst speedtrap I have ever seen. Even though is about 20 miles out of my way I always take alternate routes. DRIVERS BEWARE!
