US Highway 64

Just to let Everyone know a lawsuit against Oakland to prevent them for annexing to Hwy 196 has been dropped. This means the Oakland PD ( meter maids ) will be hitting this area VERY hard to put more money in the City Coffers. So watch you speed in about 30 days. They will be having many many cars on this new hunting ground. Happy Ticket writing

Speed limit drops immediately from 65 to 55, then before a motorist has time to "coast" to the new speed the sign reads 45. The speed change on both ends of town are identical and it is at the speed limit change where they stop people. Police patrol heavily on both ends of town when the sun shines, disappear when it rains. There is a single red light in the town, and police jurisdiction extends quite a way out of the city going east or west. I have seen as much as 3 squad cars at one site, with a person who had been above the speed limit being stopped.

State highway 64 runs through the city limits of Oakland for about a 2-mile stretch. This tiny town has a reported 13 police cars (that’s right – 13) to patrol this 2-mile stretch of highway. Speed limit is 45 mph. and 55 mpf for a short distance. It is not uncommmon to have 300 people show up on court dates and these are just the people who choose to show up at court. The word around the mid-south has gotten around and most all vehicles will slow down. Most motorists that I know will boycott the little town because of its notorious reputation for giving speeding tickets. Even when one is trying to stay within the limits, should you wander above the limit you could be caught. A person who once worked for this city reports that it gets much of its revenue from the tickets written.

Oakland is the worst of the 2, much worse than Whiteville but Whiteville is pushing for the title. The way Oakland has done it is that once you see the sign saying reduce speed ahead if you don’t immediately get off of your accelerater by the time you get to the slower posted speed you will not have had time enough for your car to slow uo to meet the new limit without some braking..and of course, that is where the cops sit. If uopn leaving Oakland your are in a 55 MPH and you see the 65 MPH sign ahead and you start to accelerate to 65 mph, you will get a ticket because you didn’t wait to get to the 65 mph sign. Whiteville is just a wide place in the road amybe 30 miles east of Oakland. The town of Whiteville has snatched up a vast stretch of Hwy 64 east, east of the town. This area is completely rural and far away from the village of Whiteville where the cops NEED to be patrolling, not in the boonies! Well guess what…they patrol in the boonies. (I consider this to be very poor police work to say the least. If you are on the open road, early in the morning with no one else around, why would a municipal cop be out there? Caveat Emptor!

Anywhere in the City Limits of Oakland. This is a small town and they have a lot of police cars. Every car has radar. The speed limits will change several times within a short distance.
