Salt Lake City, Utah Speed Traps
3rd Avenue near A Street
Third Avenue westbound (one way street) between A street and Canyon Side Road. Just after you pass A street there’s a 15% grade. Posted speed limit is 25mph. Ride your brakes or gear way down or you’ll be above 40mph in a flash. They sit at the bottom and just wave you over to the curb. I saw three cars get tickets in ten minutes. Most people observe the limit (25mph) in the Avenues (which they should, as most streets are narrow with limited visibility), but this particular stretch is wide with good visibility on both sides and no cross streets. They’re shooting fish in a barrel by watching this steep, short stretch as the vast majority of drivers quickly slow back to the limit after it flattens out at the bottom.
West 400 Street near Interstate 15
This is the W 400 s. viaduct over the train tracks.
Usually there are 2 or 3 motor cycle officers parked in the
shade of the I-15 overpass at the west end or on the side of the road at the east end of the viaduct with Lidar units and
they nail you as you top the viaduct.
400 West Street near 600 North Street
Southbound from I-15 Exit at 600 N. Posted at 30MPH. Independent Engineering Study shows: Average Speed appr. 41MPH; 85th percentile appr. 46MPH. MUTCD compliant limit would be 45MPH. 46MPH ticket appealed to 3rd Dist. Court Traffic engineer reported accident rates not unusual and testified that 30MPH was "reasonable" but couldn’t find record of required engineering study.
State Street near South 600 Street
As of 3/7/07 Motorcycle Police speed enforcement is in effect along State St. in the 600 S. areas of Salt Lake City. Speed limit is only 30 mph in this area, which is confusing because it is up to 45 along the same road just a few blocks away. Be careful and use your radar detectors!
South Temple Street near Interstate 15
On the corner of South Temple and I-15. As you are going down the overpass on South Temple heading West, maintain the proper speed limit. You never know when an officer on bike or car is waiting at the bottom of the ramp on the side street, usually hidden until it’s too late. I took the driving class and the instructor admitted that this is a speed trap.
