HWY 31 heading out of Kerens TX. towards Athens TX.

Kerens, TexasOct 08, 20200 Comments

Two officers in a new to very late model unmarked Black Tahoe or Suburban pulled me over for 60mph in the 45mph zone heading out of town. As stated in other reviews the 45 mph zone extends far from where there are buildings or other evidence of you being in a city. There is nothing but open range land on both sides of the road in this area. As stated in another review, they waited at the 60mph sign and I actually pulled over at the 70mph sign just a couple hundred yards after that. I have been coming through here for years for business in North East Texas and have never had an issue. Have not had a ticket in 22 years. The limit signs are the smallest allowed by law and there are very few of them. Highly recommend not driving through here and if you do, a dash cam is wise. I’m not entirely sure I wasn’t railroaded on this. Finally, don’t stop here to spend money.

leaving town on the highway

As you are driving through Kerens, TX on highway 31 north toward Athens the town has an extended 45 mph zone after the last stop signal. The habitations and business on the sides of the highway give way to more open land giving the illusion you are out of town. One naturally assumes that it is time to return to highway speeds. The police will sit at the 60 mph sign that appears to be well out of town. It is then that you realize you are already going 60 mph but are still in the unnaturally extended 45 mph zone. The police officer will pull you over, probably about next to the 70 mph sign and politely write you a ticket for over $200. Your clean record or possession of a CHL will buy you no mercy. This is a well thought out speed trap that the city has placed to increase their revenue. As for my part I will do my best to never spend a nickel in any business near Kerens, TX. Be careful.

Kerens, TX Hwy 31 (inside city limits – near 200 block)

The Kerens, TX municipal police department has set-up a speed trap on Hwy 31 inside city limits (at or near 200 block). The speed drops quickly from 45 miles an hour to 35 miles an hour and returns to 45 miles an hour. There is approximately 2-3 blocks that the speed is 35 miles an hour.

The police officer who stopped me clearly was disinterested in my inquiries regarding the exact location of the 35 mile an hour speed limit sign, whether it was evident that I had purposely reduced my speed (actual speed 43…he ticketed me at 45) and was meeting the intent of safe operation of my vehicle although I was unknowingly exceeding the speed limit, and whether Kerens Chamber of Commerce would be pleased with the reputation of a “speed trap city”.

The officer failed to provide me information on the fine schedule, contact information for addressing the citation, or other information to assist me with the citation.

I have contacted the Kerens Chamber of Commerce and notified the director that I would no longer patronize any business within the city limits. The excessive starting fine for speeding is $197 with $2 per mile addition over the speed limit.

Speed limit drops to 35 mph from highway speed of 70

One police officer loves to sit in the 35 mph zone. I know because he has stopped me twice. Each time rudely asking where was I going in such a hurry. Please, the 35 mph zone is about three blocks long. The town reduced speed from the highway is probably about a mile all together. 70 on each side reduced to 35 for 3 blocks. My resolution – I will never make a purchase in this town. Business owners fyi, your losing sales from this speed trap.

State Highway Going west through the small downtown area near downtown

Kerens, TexasJul 27, 20081 Comments

Going west on Highway 31 from Athens to Corsicana at about 9 p.m. on a Saturday night, I was pulled over for speeding. I had been attentive to the speed signs as I approached this small town. There was no traffic. I slowed down when I saw the speed limit drop. The officer made some remark that I appeared to have been drinking. Actually I was suffering from a sinus infection that night and although I had had dinner with friends where alcohol was served, I had had nothing. I drive a car that looks expensive. I was not speeding but was given a ticket for being 10 miles over the speed limit. This is definitely a speed trap set up to make money.
