Sacramento, California Speed Traps

Driving northbound on I-80 between Greenback and the truck scales before Antelope. An airplane flys high up and to the right on weekend mornings "to catch the people flying up the hill to Tahoe," as the citing officer told me. The plane will radio down to the car cop and there could be other cars going faster than you by the time the cop is on the freeway, but they are mandated to pull you over regardless… "because the guy up there caught ya"

Two Sac or CHP motorcycles usually work this section of La Riviera between Howe Ave and Occidental Drive. Posted is 35 mph, traffic cruises at 45 mph normally, 60 mph if you’re rushing.

Southbound traffic, frustrated by rush hour, finally opens up just south of Pocket road. People trying to make up "lost" time get nabbed by (typically) plain white CHP Crown Vic (commercial vehicle enforcement CHP) who is parked on right shoulder just past the overcrossing which is south of the big water tank/Verizon plant. The officer is standing next to his open driver’s door and clocks traffic that has just begun to speed up after traversing rush hour slowdowns. This is exacerbated by a downhill run from the Freeport Blvd. overcrossing.

As I-80 curves around to the right just under the West El Camino overcrossing, there’s often a CHP (both car and motorcycle) sitting on the sholder with radar or laser gun. They’re hidden behind the overcrossing until you come around the curve and then it’s too late. The traffic is coming down from the bridge that crosses the Sacramento River so it’s flowing at a good clip and usually faster than the posted speed…..especially during the commute hours.

if u get off capital city freeway headed east twords del paso blvd as soon as u go over the railroad tracks and head down hill u will see motercycle pd. on ur right and left every day rush hour morning and night!
