Baker Road near Baker Grove Road

Acworth, GeorgiaJul 15, 20080 Comments

Acworth PD usually sits in the turn lane near the Dollar General or the Auto Zone. They seem to be trying to get those coming south on Baker from 92. Baker Rd is a 35mph zone from 92 all the way south to Jiles Rd. Plus, it’s also very difficult to make a left turn out of Baker Grove onto Baker Rd northbound.

Woodstock Road near State Highway 92

Illegal School Zone Trap. This is Woodstock Road, just north of Hwy 92 intersection, cops enforcing the Oak Grove Elementary School zone(6118 Woodstock Road Acworth, GA 30102).
Officers (usually 2 HEAT officers) are in the church parking lot, facing north, using LASER on southbound traffic.
Usually it is H.E.A.T. officers. Their cars are parked deep within the church parking lot (to be obstructed from approaching motorists). The officers stand roadside with laser in hand, waving their prey into parking lot.

They zap until 9AM which is when this particular school’s speed zone is over. I spoke with the principal and she said they are on a ‘late schedule’ with busses etc, so that’s why the zone is enforced so late.
Actually Cherokee Co. officers stand in the road and direct traffic from about 8am – 8:45am. Pretty easy not to speed when cops are standing in the middle of the road!
But watch out at 8:45am! If you’re running late to work, you won’t see the usual "traffic-directing-cops" and it’s easy think "Oh well, school zone is over, I’ll stay at 45"….but HEAT is there for their 15 minutes of fame from 8:45am to 9am!

What makes it illegal? Signage as wrong. Starting off, this road is posted 45mph. The school zone drops the speed to 25mph. This is a 20mph drop in speed (45-25 = 20 for you cops out there).
**GA Law states that any time the speed drops by MORE THAN 10MPH, there must be a sign that says "Reduced Speed Ahead". This applies even in school zones. Without this sign, ANY and I do mean ANY speed ticket can easily found NOT Guilty. Such a sign is NOT PRESENT at all!

Also illegal due to the fact that their cruisers are obstructed from view to approaching motorists within 500 feet…again, GA Law! The cruisers are parked so ‘deep’/away from the road, that they are not visible to motorists due to signage and vegitation in church’s yard.

ALSO, the principal said the school zone speed goes until 9:00 AM. However, someone should tell the flashing lights, because they are still flashing well beyond 9AM. And the cops enforce until the flashing lights go out!

State Highway Hwy 92 near Lake Acworth Parking Lot

If you are heading from hwy 41 along hwy 92 there is a slight hill that leads to a bridge which crosses Lake Acworth/ Lake Alatoona and then there is a parking lot for visitors to look at Lake Acworth. This is usually where they sit. I was heading to North Metro one day and got caught on my way there, but on my way back the same guy was sitting there four hours later so time of day doesn’t matter.
