Waukomis, Oklahoma Speed Traps
Driving to Enid for the 1st time, the speed limit was 65. Speed drops from 65 to 45 within 1/2 mile span. As soon as I saw the 45 MPH posting, I saw the Cop car sitting in the middle of the grass between the 4 lanes of highway. I saw his lights & knew it was for me (going 64 MPH) and pulled over. He gave me a $260 ticket. I asked if the HWY stays at 45 the rest of the way into town. No, he replied, You’re already back in the 65 MPH zone. Everyone in the car was floored! I’ve never experienced such a small pocket where the MHP drops by 20, then immediately goes back up to 65.
Speed drops from 65 to 45 in 1 mile span for town of Waukomas (population) 1,268). Arresting officer wears no name identification, refuses to give his name and does not sign summons. Officer has bragged to locals that he works on "commission".
High speed highway US 81 on east side of Waukomis. City is completely to the west of the highway with open fields on the right of the highway. City has installed a series of slowdown signs to 45 mph which are easily missed when traveling at the posted highway speed of 65 mph. Signs are situated so that you are in violation before you can slow down. It will cost you 100 to 200 dollars for a violation payable to the city of Waukomis.
When you get into the city limits of this town the speed limit immediately drops from 65 to 45mph. On one side of the road you have a wide open pasture. On the other side you have one convenience store. No school. This is a 4 lane highway. The moneythieving bastards like to sit in the middle safety zone directly in front of the convenience store. Watch your six when you drive through here.
Waukomis is just South of Enid Oklahoma. They have annexed a mile or two of 81 in both directions. Speed limits are strictly enforced and a few miles over gets you ticketed. I’ve never been stopped there, it’s just a well known local speed trap.
