Los Fresnos, Texas Speed Traps
Highway 100
Police appear to take advantage of tourists trying to make it to South Padre Island. They drive back and forth on Highway 100, circling like buzzards, waiting anxiously for drivers that miss the 30 mph speed limit change. I saw the sign, slowed down and still got a ticket for doing 40 in a 30, which was bogus.

Los Fresnos, Texas…extended the city limits way out of town to make people passing through to Padre Island think that they were now out of town and would go back up to highway speed. I stopped in Pt. Isabel afterwards and listened to the talk about how many extra cops were put on duty for Spring Break traffic. The idea, for the little towns, is to snag some of the money going through to Padre Island. It’s a “legal” form of armed (they have guns) robbery.

The Los Fresnos speedtrap is a notorious one. Police nab motorists coming and going thru town on S.H. 100. Slow down and mind the speed limit signs, no sense pushing your luck even with a radar detector. The town is really small and you’ll get thru quick enough at posted speed limits.

Texas State Highway 100 notorious with locals as a speed trap.
Especially brutal enforcement to out of state drivers.
Highway speed is 65mph except through Los Fresnos where speed is reduced to 25mph with very, very little warning (small obscured sign). Between I-77 and S Padre Island on SH-100.
We drive this route many times a year and have never driven thru Los Fresnos, Tx without seeing the town cops ticketing drivers passing through town!

speed limit drops from 45 to 30 and only a small sign serves as a notice police patrol very actively as it’s a direct route to and from South Padre Island Texas
