State Street near Salvation Army

Ann Arbor, MichiganJun 08, 20070 Comments

All up and down State as you begin to head south past Yost Ice Arena. As you get closer to the Salvation Army and the car dealerships the speed limit stays at 35mph even though it seems it should be 45mph. So what does everyone do? They go 50mph.

This "trap" goes more or less all the way down until the speed changes by the airport (past Ellsworth).

Even when State turns into a 4 lane street with on ramps and off ramps for 94, the speed limit remains 35mph.

State Highway 14 near Barton Drive

Ann Arbor police continue heavy radar/laser enforcement at probably their favorite speed trap location in all of Ann Arbor, M-14, E. bound (a state road), at or near Barton Dr., where the speed limit suddenly drops from 70 MPH to 55. Watch out at: (1) At the start of the concrete barrier on M-14 just before Barton Dr., (1) about a 100 Fort from start of barrier (which hides their trap), and /or (3) cop car parked on the Barton Dr. ramp just before entering M-14. The second location is very dangerous for motorists attempting to enter M-14 as the cop car blocks the view of oncoming traffic on M-14. Ann Arbor cops here a more a hazard at this speed trap area than offenders. wildly driving across 2 -3 lanes of traffic to catch that speeder. Ka band radar, rear window preferred.

If youre ticketed, check your citation carefully. As was reported, Ann Arbor cops must use a State of Michigan citation book, not the city ordinance version on a state road for the ticket to be valid. Ann Arbor lost a court case about 3 years ago over this issue. Ann Arbor cops love handing out city ordinance tickets because Ann Arbor then keeps most of the money from the fine. With the state citation book, a ticket written on it sees most of the dollars going to the state.

Huron River Drive near Maple Road

Ann Arbor, MichiganApr 28, 20070 Comments

With construction underway of a nearby road, many drivers have detoured to Huron River Dr. to reach downtown Ann Arbor. Not one to lose a revenue opportunity, Ann Arbor police have set up speed trap shop shortly after Huron River Dr. enters the city limits. Usually two cars are used, one a black Crown Vic, nearly invisible at dawn, hiding in the bushes, the other cruiser painted white. Take a look at the pavement near where the speed trap cars sit, multiple strips of tire rubber burned into the road – they really take care of the taxpayers’ resources. Be aware, when you’re driving in Ann Arbor, consider the entire city a speed trap.
