Portland, Oregon Speed Traps
Hwy 99E under Ross Is. Bridge – Southbound
They stay to the shadows under the bridge, on the side opposite the morning rush (out of town). Posted speed is 35mph (with road work flags – but there’s never any road work – beware-fines double due to this deception)
I-84 West near Lloyd Center
Motorcycle officer hides behind the pylon for the traffic message sign on the right hand side of the road about 1/8 mi before the Lloyd Center exit.
It’s rare to see a cop there, but you really won’t see him until it’s far, far too late. Radar at night or early morning (light traffic) and laser during rush hour.
I-205 N near airport
Motorcycle officers (sometimes multiple) under bridges in bright sunlight. They use Laser (Lidar) and hop up and down the stretch after the I-84 merge. You won’t see them until it’s too late, and they’re only out there in sunny weather.
I-5 S, Marquam Bridge
Police officers on the right-hand side of the ramp up onto the bridge itself, just before it turns and crosses the Willamette. There’s enough space there to park two or three cruisers and a whole load of motorcycles.
The most common time to see lots of officers here is when there’s an event going on downtown or when they’re doing a "Speed Enforcement Period", which the newspapers usually announce. It’s hard to get back to the spot after they tag someone, so they usually gather a whole bunch of motorcycles and clock people until they run out of officers, and then they disperse.
I-84 East Bound on-ramp at 60th AVe
This is a prime example of a speed trap. This is a poorly designed freeway onramp being exploited by the police department. The onramp is partially in a residential neighborhood(the poor design part), which you have to speed in towards the far end of the onramp, otherwise you will cause an accident merging into 55MPH freeway traffic, or be forced off the road. Police photo radar Van sits approx. 50~75yrds down the freeway onramp on the right hand side. They place a litte tiny sign on the ground saying photo radar is in use on the right hand curb as you round the corner onto the onramp. The problem is that you are looking left to the traffic on the freeway to merge, not to far ahead of you, and the photo radar is parked along the right side of the freeway onramp set to issue a citation if you are going, I think 11MPH over the speed limit. The posted speed is 25MPH . Several people at my work have been caught in this trap, as has others not from my work.
