Elysian Fields Avenue near Interstate 10

New Orleans, LouisianaApr 23, 20050 Comments

On Elysian Fields, just south of I-10, there is an overpass that goes over some RR tracks. One or two motorcycle cops camp out on (usually) the north side of the overpass and catch northbound Elysian Fields traffic "speeding" over the overpass. Limit is 35, and it is excruciatingly painful to go that slow on this 6-lane street.

St. claude Avenue near elysian fields Parkway

There is a school zone, but no school or pedestrians ever on the streets or sidewalks. Two motorcycle cops hide beyond the curve and parked cars five feet from the end of the school zone sign and pull you over. There is rarely a radar gun anywhere near them because they are always in the middle of the street or writing tickets. When I asked the officer where the school is he replied, "Somewhere over there." There are about five school zones on St. Claude and this is the only one that has no crossing guard, no school, and no pedestrians, but usually motorcycle cops making money for the city.

As you come from Almonaster to Old Gentilly, you cross over I510. The speed change to 35MPH just on the overpass. The motorcycle cop is past the apex of the hump. He has been seen on both sides of this overpass. Be careful, he doesn’t let people talk their way out of it.

Almonaster Boulevard near Railroad

This speed trap is eastbound on Almonaster BLVD as you finish crossing the railroad tracks. Be careful anywhere in New Orleans. NOPD is not only writing for miles over the speed limit. They are for good measure also tacking on Careless Operation and taking drivers ID also. There is a lawsuit pending to stop the practice of taking IDs as b/c of 9-11-01 you need a picture ID in most places. I was flying out 2 weeks after I was issued a ticket and the smart thing is since this was on a Friday is go to DMV 1st thing Monday morning and get a DUP ID. It worked b/c at this time NOPD still did things handwritten now they have devices that are automatically connected to a computer. So be aware in NOPD areas
